Open University Not Accredited to Run Law Programme

-- --
The body regulating legal education in the country, the Council of Legal Education, Tuesday said the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) had not been accredited to run law degree programme.
Speaking in Abuja at a briefing to commence the 50 years anniversary of the Nigerian Law School, the Chairman of the Council, Mr Onueze Okocha, said anyone who studied law at NOUN and hoping to secure admission to the Nigerian Law School was merely wasting his time and resources.
He explained that NOUN did not have the necessary pre requisites such as moot court, lecturers among others to run a degree in law.

He advised those already studying law at NOUN to transfer to accredited universities.
He said: “It is a foolhardy for someone to establish a university, put in his money and then choose to run an illegal faculty of law.”
Okocha said the Council of Legal Education operated under law and therefore would continue to implement the law.
He also dismissed claims thatthe council might eventually accredit the law programmebeing run by non-accredited universities.

He said: “I don’t want them to waste their monies and time. They should seek transfer to accredited universities.”
Also speaking, the Director General of the Nigerian Law School, Dr. Tahir Mamman, said anyone who only wanted to have an acquitance with the law, could go to a non-accreditedu
niversity to study law.
He said: “But if they want to become legal practitioners, they have to go to accredited universities.”
Mamman said the list of universities accredited to run law programme had been published and any oneinterested should endeavour to look up for it before putting in for law in any of the universities.
Speaking on the proposed amendment of the law establishing the Council of Legal Education, Okocha stated that the amendment would allow the law school to be best administered.

He said: “It must be noted that the proposals, for restructuring and re-organisation of the Council of Legal Education and the Nigerian Law School, are geared towards improving the content and quality of the Legal Educationin Nigeria, and ensure that the legal practitioners produced by the Nigerian Law School are duly equipped with requisite character and learning, so that they may be better enabled to discharge their duties and responsibilities in that regard, not just in Nigeria, but throughout the world.”

  1. Most of our leaders are myopic, out-dated, and anachronistic. That is why we would continue to have more 'oga at the top'.

Surf the net you would know that at present renowned lawyers in the world are products of open universities.

You had rather contributed positively to streamlining the NOUN's law programme which is a federal government institution instead of declaring it illegal.

By extension sir, you are calling nigerian law school and council of legal education illegal since they are operated under the same law which instituted the NOUN.

    Let's be better learned.

  2. The National Open University of Nigeria is a Federal Government owned institution, hence I postulate that Nigerian Law School and Council of Legal Education should ensure they put the neccessary machinery in motion towards ensuring that NOUN LAW program meet their requirements and accredite the program once that is met QED.

  3. Just as someone mentioned above, it is unfair to say a Federal Government University admitted students to read Law with an intention to be called into the Nigeria Bar, only to be told that he has studied Law in an unaccredited University. Where were the Legal Guru in the Council of Legal Education when the University advertised the course, commenced admission and trained their candidates. I only hope this is not another ploy by a group to shield some people from becoming professionals in Law.
I know several Diploma holders who are now qualified Accountants/Engineers etc. These a cherish-able professions too which many people purseu at Polythecnic and University level, the sacred in Legal Profession is best known to those people hoarding it. Finally, more than 80% of the Lawyers in this country today go to any length to get their children admitted to Universities to study law. Let Mr/Barr Onueze Okocha search his mind and allow his consence judge him. Remember that the whole world is watching this issue

  4. With respect to the learned SAN & his colleague, the NOUN is created by an Act of Parliament.Only the NUC has such right to accredit courses including law.It would be incorrect to hold that NOUN runs an illegal law faculty. The CLE should get serious.
