One killed, 4 injured in clash over missing cows in Jos

A clash between some members of the Special Task Force and youths of Riyom has left one person dead and four others seriously injured. Among the injured were said to be three of the STF operatives.
Our correspondent gathered that the clash occurred when the STF operatives had gone in search of some missing cows. The new onslaught in the restive Riyom community came as a group has alleged invasion of its settlements in Wase, Langtang North and Langtang South by terrorists and mercenaries and have been subjecting the inhabitants to hardship..

According to a statement issued by the umbrella body of Tarok in the three local government areas called “Ngwang Ishi Otarok” signed by its Secretary General, Pastor Nanlir Kartim Napbut made available, it said unwarranted attack on the Tarok settlements in recent times had been a source of worry to both the government and peace loving people of the area.
The group said in recent time several villages were invaded, people killed at random, houses burnt adding that some of the settlements sacked and burnt included Mavo Ssbon Gida, Tunga, Damshanya, Ruwa Gongo,Dam, Yola Lamba, Mavo Samiya, Karkashi, Gimbi and Bakin Rijiya among others.

In the case of Riyom, it was gathered that some cows belonging to Fulani herdsmen reportedly got missing from Riyom, but when reports got to the owners that the cows had been sighted in Farin lamba, some few kilometres from Riyomtown, they solicited the assistance of soldiers to retrieve them.
Some youths in Farin Lamba were said to have stoutly resistedwhat they described as illegal incursion of their land by the soldiers. One of the youths was said to have fired a catapult that hit one of the soldiers on the head.
In the process, the soldiers were said to have started indiscriminate shooting to scare away the youths. It was gatheredthat one of them was hit in the process.
The incident led to the blockage of the Jos-Abuja road as protesting youths and women took over the highway.

A former member of the Plateau State House of Assembly, EmanuelDanboyi,

said that two youth allegedly shot by STF during the clash had been hospitalised.
Majority Leader of Plateau House of Assembly, Mr. Daniel Dem, confirmed the incident and faulted STF for visiting the area without notifying him or other key stakeholders in Riyom.
“We are not happy with what happened in our community today, especially the casualties recorded as a result of such a grave mistake, STF made a serious mistake in taking that step without notifying us. Perhaps such incident would not have happened”..
Mr. Dem expressed concern over the continuous clash between STF personnel and people of the area, saying that they always at the receiving end.’’

Media Officer of the Special Task Force, Captain Salisu Mustapha, who confirmed the incident, saidthree soldiers were wounded in the fracas.
He said, “But to our surprise, when we approached the area for the assignment, women and some youths of the area attackedour personnel, which led to the injury of three soldiers.Some of the youths fired gunshots into the crowd which led to the casualties recorded,’’ he said.
In a related development, the Plateau state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Yiljap Abraham has said that only 18 persons where killed in the fresh outbreak of violence that rocked Wase Local.Mustapha said STF received intelligence report that cows said to have been stolen were sighted in the Farin-Lamba area of Riyom and went in search of the cows.

He was disputing media reports that the death toll had rise to 40 while speaking to newsmen in Jos
Yiljab who condemned in strong terms the outbreak of violence inthe state said the state government has put in place modalities in order to foster lasting peace in the troubled region
Yiljab identified Cattle rusting asone of the major cause of the outbreak of violence in the area, adding that the state government is determined to bring back lasting peace in the state.
