Rufai told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the policemen were attacked as they took guard behind the sand-bags which provided barriers at the entrance of the station. He said five of the gunmen were, however, killed.
He said that although they failedin their plan to burn down the station, the gunmen took away some rifles.
“The gunmen came around midnight trying to enter the police station with intent to burn it down, but were resistedby the police. We lost four policemen and their rifles were carted away but the station wasprotected,” Rufai said.
Meanwhile, unidentified gunmen yesterday struck in Lagos and killed a foreigner whose nationality is yet to be ascertained.
The victim identified as Mr. Santos Korie, it was said, was driving in his Toyota Highlanderjeep when the gunmen, who were alleged to be dressed in police uniforms, opened fire on him around Daleko bridge, Mushin, Lagos, at about 7am.
According to Lagos State Police Command spokesperson Ngozi Braide, who confirmed the incident, the command through the Commander in-charge of ‘D’ Command, Mushin, Mr. Omololu Bishi, received a distress call over the killing and he led officers and men to the crime scene.
Upon arriving at the scene, eyewitnesses told the Area Commander that the gunmen, who were dressed in police uniforms, operated in a commercial bus and shot in the chest.
But, Braide, in her response saidthat seven persons have been arrested in connection with the incident.
She added that the arrested men had been transferred to the detectives attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Lagos State Police Command. It could not be immediately ascertained whether the gunmen were hired killers in police uniforms or real policemen.
Braide said that CP had ordered that the gunmen be fished out, with a view to knowing their identities, particularly as they alleged that the killers operated in police uniforms.
The CP, it was said, recalled that in recent time gunmen had been operating in military and police uniforms and pledged that the command would not leave any stone unturned to get to the root cause of the incident.
