NOUN: Students Demand Sack of VC, Others

-- --

Students of National Open University of Nigeria, NOUN, under the aegis of Congress of NOUN Students (CONS), have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to sack the institution’s Vice-Chancellor and four other management staff for alleged extortion.

Claiming that the VC, Prof. Vincent Ado Tenebe; the Deputy VC (Academic), Prof. Patrick Eke Eya; the Deputy VC (Administration), Prof. Victor Adedipe; registrar, Mrs Josephine Akinyemi; and bursar, Mr. John Onyeme, have conspired to turn the institution into a money-draining organisation, the students, in an open letter, alleged that NOUN has become a “den for endemic corruption.”

In a press statement signed by all its officers, including the president, Abdulrazaq Hamzat and General Secretary, Iyinkaye Alameen, CONS said the school which was “established to provide flexible, accessible and affordable education to Nigerians has now been turned to a place where certain cliques of academia extort helpless students, whose only crime is their quest for university education.

“Furthermore, the sack of the above individuals is not all we are demanding; we also demand their immediate prosecution over the endemic corruption that currently takes place in the institution.

“Let it be known that should the appropriate authorities not act swiftly on this call, students may be left with no option than to hit the street in a peaceful protest to press home our demands. Our freedom to association, admission to law school and mobilisation for NYSC must be sacrosanct.”

The students also alleged that the university has prevented students from having a formal students’ association because of fears that such association will “challenge corrupt practices taking place at the institution.

“Other issues mentioned in the demand include students paying for course materials without receiving the course materials. The total amount received for these course materials annually is over N14 billion. We asked why students should continue to pay since they don’t get the materials paid for.

“It should be noted that the management of our institution has made every effort to make us half-baked graduates, but we refuse to be half-baked. Only half-baked graduates conform to negativities and accept injustice to strive without questioning. We can’t be half-baked, we refuse to conform to the violation of our rights,” they said.
