Vandals loot Lagos hotels, shoot policemen

-- --
Suspected vandals on Monday attacked two hotels on Ishawo Road in the Agric, Ikorodu area of Lagos State, during which they looted the property and engaged some policemen in a gun battle.
Information learnt that the vandals, said to be numbering 50 persons, stormed the area in two commercial buses at about 1am, and shot sporadically.

A source said the vandals invaded Westernhall Hotel and Rand Hotel, located a few metres from the Owutu Police Division, and vandalised the property.

The vandals were said to have trailed a rival group to the hotels.

Our correspondent gathered that during the attack on the hotels, policemen from the division arrived at the scene.

The vandals were said to have opened fire on them, leading to a gun battle between them and the police for about an hour.

The vandals, who looted the hotels and attempted to burn the buildings, were said to have escaped from the scene after the gun battle.

Our correspondent learnt that the police, however, arrested two of the vandals – Joshua Asumba and Kenny Good – who fell off the commercial buses.

When PUNCH Metro visited the area on Tuesday, a resident, who gave his name as Adekunle Owolabi, said the guests at the hotels hid inside bushes and threw bottles at the vandals while the commotion lasted.

He added that the two suspects fell off the buses as the vandals made to leave the area.

He said, “The vandals came in two vanagon buses. They had pump-action rifles. Some of us, who were already sleeping, were woken up by the continuous gunshots. The vandals came to burn down the hotels. It was said that the gunmen had a disagreement with some of the lodgers in the hotels.

“The hotels also serve as brothels. They house sex workers. A rival group was in the buildings and the vandals came for them. The police were able to arrest two of the vandals who were not fast enough to catch up with their buses.”

Our correspondent observed the shattered windows of Rand Hotel, even as the personnel declined comment on the matter.

A shop owner on Ishawo Road, who identified herself only as Rasheedat, said she returned to her shop on Monday to meet broken bottles on the floor.

She said, “When I came on Monday, I saw broken bottles on the road. A vehicle’s windscreen was also shattered. I sell kerosene and some of the bullets shattered my kegs. I was told that people in the hotels hurled bottles at the vandals while the shooting went on.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the incident. He added that the police recovered 50 litres of fuel abandoned by the vandals at the scene.

He said, “The hoodlums damaged the hotels’ property in an attempt to set the place ablaze. But they were repelled by a police team from Owutu. Two axes and 50 litres of fuel were recovered at the scene. Two of the vandals have been arrested, who are helping the police with investigations.
