The Independent National Electoral Commission in Imo state has declared that the governorship election in the state was inconclusive.
The reason given by the electoral body for the decision was the number of cancelled votes (144,715) in relation to the margin of victory (79,529) by the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Rochas Okorocha.
According to Premium Times, the returning officer for the election, Professor Ibidapo Obe, said a new date would be announced for a supplementary election in the cancelled wards across several local government areas.
Okorocha had garnered 385,671 votes compared to the 306,142 votes scored by the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Hon. Emeka Ihedioha who is the current Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.
The governor is leading Ihedioha by 79,529 votes, which is by far lower than the 144,715 votes cancelled by the INEC as a result of irregularities in some wards.
Okorocha had said he is ready to congratulate whoever emerges the winner of the election if he loses.
Meanwhile, Governor Abiola Ajimobi has broken the second term jinx in Oyo state by becoming the first governor to be elected twice.
Ajimobi, candidate of the APC, defeated Alao-Akala and Rashidi Ladoja, two former governors in the state to clinch the governorship position.
